Coffee beans compared: an overview of Borbone, Kimbo and other top brands

3 min read

For many people, coffee is more than a drink – it is a ritual, a moment of relaxation or the perfect start to the day. But what lies behind the different coffee beans, and why does espresso made with Borbone coffee beans taste different from Kimbo? In this guide, we explore the characteristics of different coffee bean brands and explain what matters when choosing.

1. The world of coffee beans

Two main types of coffee beans dominate worldwide: Arabica and Robusta. Each has its own character and significantly shapes the taste of your coffee.

  • Arabica: These coffee beans account for around 60-70 % of worldwide coffee production. They are known for their mild, often fruity and slightly acidic taste. Their gentler aroma means Arabica coffee beans are often used for high-quality coffees.
  • Robusta: Robusta coffee beans have a stronger, more bitter taste and contain almost twice as much caffeine as Arabica coffee beans. They are often used for espresso blends because they produce a thicker crema and give coffee more “body”.

2. Borbone coffee beans

Borbone is a brand with a long tradition, known especially in Italy for high-quality espresso. The brand often uses a blend of Arabica and Robusta coffee beans to achieve a balance between mild and strong flavours.

  • Flavour profile: Borbone coffees are known for their intense, strong flavours. Thanks to the Robusta content, the coffee offers a thick crema, perfect for espresso lovers.
  • Recommended preparation: Borbone coffee beans are ideal for making espresso, and also reveal their full flavour in bean-to-cup or portafilter machines.

3. Kimbo coffee beans

Kimbo is another Italian brand particularly popular in Naples. Kimbo offers various blends, ranging from pure Arabica to Arabica-Robusta blends.

  • Flavour profile: Compared with Borbone, Kimbo coffees are often a little milder and fruitier, especially Arabica-led blends. Even so, they offer a full aroma and fine balance.
  • Recommended preparation: Kimbo suits both espresso and filter coffee. Its delicate aromas also make excellent milk coffee drinks such as cappuccino or latte macchiato.

4. Other brands at a glance

Alongside Borbone and Kimbo, many other brands offer different coffee bean blends:

  • Lollo Caffè: One of the best-known names in the coffee business. Lavazza offers both pure Arabica blends and blends with Robusta for stronger coffees.
  • Illy: Specialises in high-quality Arabica coffee. Perfect if you appreciate a delicate, complex aroma.
  • L’Espresso: Also offers Arabica and Robusta blends, often with a slightly smoky aroma that is ideal for espresso.

5. Which coffee beans suit you?

Choosing the right coffee bean depends strongly on your personal preferences. Here are some questions to help you decide:

  • Do you like mild or strong coffee? If you prefer a gentle, fruity taste, choose Arabica-led coffee beans. Robusta blends are better for strong, intense coffees.
  • Brewing method? Coffee beans with a Robusta content are ideal for espresso and bean-to-cup machines, while pure Arabica blends tend to suit filter coffee.
  • With milk or black? If you enjoy cappuccino or latte macchiato, look for coffee beans with a balanced aroma that harmonises well with milk.
