44 mm E.S.E.: pods, machines and pack sizes
Will E.S.E. pods fit your machine? Learn how to recognise the 44 mm format, brew an espresso and choose a pack size that suits how often you drink coffee.

Which machines take 44 mm E.S.E. pods?
E.S.E. stands for Easy Serving Espresso. A classic espresso pod holds a single dose of ground coffee between two layers of filter paper and measures about 44 mm across. Senseo pads and capsules each require their own system.
Look for “E.S.E.” or “E.S.E. 44 mm” in the manual for your exact model. Dedicated pod machines have a matching brew chamber. Some portafilter machines require a dedicated E.S.E. basket. Check whether that basket is included before buying.
How to brew espresso with E.S.E. pods
- Fill the tank with fresh water and let the machine warm up as directed. Run a short rinse before inserting a pod if your manufacturer recommends it.
- Unwrap one pod and lay it flat in the E.S.E. holder. Seat the paper edge evenly before closing the chamber or locking the portafilter.
- Start with the espresso volume the manufacturer recommends. Use the same machine, water and volume in the cup when comparing two blends.
- Remove the used pod according to the manual, clean the holder and run the recommended rinse when needed.
Small pack or a supply for later?
A small original pack is a good starting point. At two cups a day, 50 pods last about 25 days and 150 pods last 75 days. When comparing packs of the same coffee, look at the price per pod and factor in shipping.
Decaffeinated coffee also comes in small packs of 15 or 18 pods. For tea and flavoured pods, read the ingredients and brewing instructions on the pack.
Common questions about E.S.E. pods
Why is water flowing around the pod?
Check the E.S.E. basket and centre the pod. Residue around the edge can prevent it from sitting correctly. If the problem persists, check the seal and the cleaning instructions for your machine.
How do I keep E.S.E. pods fresh?
Store them in a dry place away from heat and light. Open each individual wrapper just before brewing and follow the best-before date on the pack.
